Summary[edit]

Description

Pack Horse Inn, Beverley c.1910. The Pack Horse Inn, Beverley, with presumably, the innkeeper, stood in the doorway, holding hands with a small child at his side. The men gathered around in the photograph look like they are about to depart on a cycle ride, possibly a leisurely sunday afternoon, and the small girl in the image looks as though she is dressed in her ‘Sunday best.’ There are records dating the inn to as early as 1784, with John Champion being listed as one of the first known innkeepers. The sign of the Pack Horse was a common one and often denoted that the inn was a posting inn. It can also be seen as a sign of the pub’s age, pack horses were one of the few means of transporting goods overland prior to the introduction of carts and wagons towards the end of the 17th century, as before this period, all goods were transported by pack horse. In 1969, the property, situated on the corner of Dyer Lane and Market Place, was awarded a Grade II listed building status and has a blue heritage plaque displayed on its wall containing brief details from its past. Today, the frontage of the building is relatively unchanged from its days as an inn.
