Summary

[edit]
Description This profile was photographed in the western lowlands of Ecuador. The site is on a nearly level terrace. The soil is formed in a succession of recent and very old volcanic ash deposits. Evidence of andic materials normally associated with volcanic ash is lacking. Presumably the amorphous (short range ordered) materials present in volcanic ash have weathered and recrystallized to clay, of which halloysite is abundant but not dominate. The entire profile has a base saturation percentage between 66 and 79. A thick argillic horizon below 77 cm with clay content over 35 percent to over 165 cm underlies a loam textured mollic epipedon that is over 50 cm thick thus the classification of Pale great group and Pachic subgroup, respectively. Although the site is vegetated by tropical forest adjacent land on like soil is intensely cultivated.
