Summary[edit]

Description

It is important to note that all types of axonometric projection are approximate representations of reality and cannot replace perspective. However, due to their ease of execution, they are a useful tool for architects and engineers to show three-dimensional configurations in a clear and quick way.

According to the direction of the projection center with respect to the projection plane, axonometric projection is divided into two categories: orthogonal and oblique. Orthogonal axonometric projections include isometric, dimetric, and trimetric projections, while oblique axonometric projections include plan oblique, elevation oblique, and generic oblique projections.

Since the reason for using axonometric projection is its ease of execution compared to perspective, it is logical to use the simpler types of axonometric projections, such as plan oblique or elevation oblique. In plan oblique, the projections of shapes belonging to horizontal planes remain in their true shape, while those belonging to other planes are distorted. However, the measurements of vertical lines (parallel to the z-axis) can remain equal to the true measurements, when the projection center direction is 45 degrees with respect to the projection plane.

Similarly, in elevation oblique, the projections of shapes belonging to the zx or (yz) plane can be in their true shape, and the measurements of depth lines (parallel to the x or y axis) can also be without distortion.
