Writing reads, “With the boys of the 26th “Yankee” Division, the first ship to sink a German submarine.” Published April 10, 1919. Though she fought off the German submarine on April 19, 1917, she did not sink it. The engagement was the first of U.S. naval personnel against the enemy after the declaration of war on 6 April. (6/19/2015). |
