Title |
Oval Reliquary mount with rock crystal. |
||
Description |
English: A complete sheet metal gilt copper-alloy medieval ovoid mount decorated with large rock crystal central setting from a chasse / reliquary or other elaborate ecclesiastical object. Dating to the period c.AD 1100-1250.
Description: The mount is an even oval shape with rounded ends. A wide border of incised vertical ovals/vesica resembling the mount itself surroundes the large oval setting bezel with a high topped cell wall with a zig zag top. A very large large rock crystal cabochon remains in situ and is very clear and polished to a high degree. The border is pierced with four sub-circular perforations for rivet attachments at the top, bottom and middle of each side. The rock crystal cabochon has been polished in such a way that a central ridge runs along its centre top to bottom. The mount itself has substantial gilt remaining on its front with only small patches of copper-alloy corrosion or patination coming through. The back of the mount is a mottled light-dark green colour with some patche sof brown. The mount has had some warping around the edges but is in relatively good condition Measurements: 42.17mm long, 32.84mm wide, 14.36mm thick and 17.78g in weight Discussion: The closest parallels for the object are those of ESS-13DCF4, WMID-DAA5A5 and NARC2709, decoration is rather a differnt form from each other but overall shape, size and central cell are closely linked. The 12th Century chasse held by the British Museum (1851,0715.2) with its mount still attached to the side wall and rock crystal stone in place is perhaps the most secure and illustrates perfectly where and how these mounts were affixed to their parent objects. The mount on that chasse has a similar zig zag topped cell wall for the rock crystal setting and the chasse/reliquary originates from Limoge, France and dated to 1175-1180. |
