His matted wig did notfit him, but it made a fearsome tangle overhis eyes. He was stripped to the waistand daubed with mud, and between worry-ing a chunk of raw beef and rattling hischains and yelling blue murder wheneverhe was prodded with a pole, he was earninghis wages and something over.
