Zinto persuaded a few of the men to gowith him to the shores of the Big Lakebefore the snow left, taking a smallcanoe on the dog-sleds for his journeyto his own people. Here they left him,giving him dried meat and pemmicanin abundance. The bays and narrows were still fullof drift ice when Zinto arrived at theisland on which he had passed so manydreary months; and first placing his canoein hiding where he could readily launchit, he relined his mossy bank and satdown and waited. No fire would helight, nor could he in any way disturbthe island. After many long days he saw comingout of the golden west the canoe he ex-pected, for he had argued, with thecharacteristic subtlety of the Indian, thatAteachili would return in the springto obliterate any story of Zintos fatethat might have been painted on therocks and trees.
