Text Appearing Before Image:
at this time, also, that JeanLe Bossu, the little hunchback from theGrand Woods, became strangely inter-ested in the old mans gold. He didnot. go about in the woodland diggingpits in the ground, for after one care-ful inspection he saw that the moneyhad not been buried there. Le Bossuhad lived all his life in the woods, andthere was little that he could not readin the open book of Nature. Accord-ingly, he began to haunt the cabin itself, dropping in upon the old man at allsorts of odd moments, and soon astrange intimacy sprang up between thetwo. Old Andre seemed almost to care forLe Bossu, for, like himself, the hunch-back was silent and morose, sitting forhours at a time in silence, staringstraight before him. Also, Le Bossuseldom came without some gift of gameor fruit, so that the old mans need ofprovisions became small indeed. When the people at Landry ques-tioned Le Bossu about this business, hemade a most astonishing reply. And do you think that you will findthe gold? they asked.
Text Appearing After Image:
BUT THIS THIS IS YOUR DAUGHTER, STAMMERED THE PRIEST IN AMAZEMENT. Perhaps so. Who knows? repliedthe little man. And what will you do with it afteryou have found it, Jean ? they persisted.Surely you will never be able to spendsuch a great amount? I will give it to the boy, Jules, re-plied Le Bossu. He is at work inMouton and is doing well. Some dayhe will make a fine man. And so the search for the gold wenton, while the hunchback spent long, silent hours in the cabin and the negroesdug beneath the trees. And then, onedark night, a cow of Mr. Gordons fellinto a freshly dug pit and broke her leg. When the old man discovered it thefollowing morning he was in despair. There was no way in which he couldhave been responsible for the matter, yet to his excited imagination the blamewould fall upon him alone. He wouldbe forced to pay for the cow, which tohim would be little worse than death. 615 6i6 THE OUTING MAGAZINE
