Text Appearing Before Image:
I got out and proceededto Brockville, on the St. Lawrence, where I spent the night. The day afterI crossed to Morristown, took theNew York train to Redwood, and fromthere drove by stage to Alexandria Bay,where I met my father and brother justarrived from New York. Together wespent a few days at our summer home—St. Johns Island—and into their ap-preciative ears I poured the tale of myconquest, and while fighting my battlesover again grew to feel quite heroic. Idid not think it necessary to mentionthat, when I fled from the bear, I leftmy rifle behind me. Trifling detailslike that could be of no interest to in-telligent listeners. That bear brought me trouble evenafter he was dead, for when I crossedthe river from Brockville to Morris-town, the American customs officer keptme standing on the dock on a cold, rainy morning undoing my prize for hisinspection. He looked it all over, andasked me a hundred questions as to itsvalue, etc., and then informed me thatraw furs were not dutiable.
