Friends in Marseilles had character-ized our undertaking as foolhardy. AStrange dialect ; a morose and sus-picious peasantry ; queer lodgings andqueerer cookery, were the least of thehardships awaiting us in the remoteand unfrequented corners of the Midi,which we proposed to explore. Accord-ing to these cheerful critics a journey across the desolate Crau or throughthe lonely Alpilles, presented as manydangers as a trip into the mountainfastnesses of Thibet. Fortunately, how-ever, I was a seasoned nomad, and mycompanion was an American youth ofsixteen, whose ungratified cowboy as-pirations greeted with enthusiasm any-thing which promised a spice of ad-venture. So with merry hearts andundismayed, we fared along the whiteroads, glad in the company of the clear-cut Southern landscape. Behind us the old city of Marseilles

Uponeither hand the hillsides sloped up-ward white and powdery, dotted withsheep and misty with gray and an-cient olives. Here and there rosegreat manorial farmhouses, red-tiledand picturesque, half-buried in bloom-ing almonds. For conveyance we had a bottle-green tiny bourriquet of African lineage, whobore with becoming humility the some-what serious sobriquet of St. Martin.How so small a donkey had come by solarge and solemn a title we were neverable to discover. Yet long before ourjoint wanderings were over the condi-tion of our wardrobe had lent a pecul-iar fitness to this apparently dispro-portionate cognomen, for was not St.Martin the friend and companion ofbeggars ?
