Text Appearing Before Image:
ught before thegreat white throne by many loving souls who wres-tled earnestly, as did Jacob of old with the Angel, and if deliverance came not, we have faith to be-lieve that it is because the ways of God are not asour ways: Not enjoyment and not sorrow is our destined end or way,But to live that each to-morrow finds us further than to-day. When we arrived at the railroad depot on Mondaymorning, to commence, or rather to re-commence,our journey, the news was on everybodys lips thatChicago was on fire; but, knowing the tendency toexaggeration in every mind and on every tongue, Idiscounted what was told me in a very liberal way.The neighbors who had accompanied us so farurged our return, to wait until some certaintyshould be reached as to the continuance of the cityor its being literacy burned off the face of theearth, but I would not listen to such suggestions, not because a day or two just then was of any greatconsequence, but rather because of my superstitiousdread about turning back.
Text Appearing After Image:
OUT FROM THE DARKNESS. 285 The augurs whose business it was to foretell theprobable outcome of warlike expeditions in Rome,by observing the flights of birds, by examining birdsentrails, or by other means equally nonsensical, could not look in each others faces without laugh-ing, so conversant were they with the absurdity oftheir profession; but the fact remains notwithstand-ing, after eighteen hundred years of Christianizinginfluence, that few men can be found who are ab-solutely without faith in omens. Few ship captainswill dare commence a voyage on Friday; the hardi-est sailor turns pale at the sight of a shark follow-ing his vessel if there is any sick man on board;the housekeeper who has upset the salt is doubtfulof the consequences unless she had the presence ofmind at the moment to throw a pinch of it overthe shoulder; and so on, through a long category ofomens in which even eminent men, such as thefirst Napoleon, have been unquestioning believers.I had not the heart to turn back
