steady the game or give it a motion uni-form with the canoe, so that the sportsman (?) mightthe more readily hit it. The whole performance con-sisted of driving the timid little creature with houndsto a lake, where the shooter (I am inclined to drop theword sportsman), with his guide in a canoe, awaited itscoming. It was no difficult matter to overtake it,swimming in the lake, and when the guide droppedhis paddle and had a good hold on the tail, the gunnerproceeded to shoot and shoot until at last he scored ;the murder was done, and the gunner had a trophy toput on his wall. The Virginia deer vary so much in size that therehave been attempts to create a number of species. They are all one and the same deer to sportsmen, thehabits of the game and the methods of pursuit beingthe same. They are all the same in appearance also, and have the same horns. The smallest variety isfound in Arizona, where the sportsman may shoot adeer so small as to be called a dwarf, on the groundwhere h
