JPEG file comment | REMBRANDT Harmenszoon van Rijn
(b. 1606, Leiden, d. 1669, Amsterdam) Portrait of a Lady with an Ostrich-Feather Fan c. 1660 Oil on canvas, 99.5 x 82.5 cm National Gallery of Art, Washington Companion piece to the Portrait of a Gentleman in the same museum. The unknown lady, lost in the world of her private thoughts, seems unaware of her surroundings and the spectator finds himself mysteriously participating in her contemplative mood. Note the consummate skill with which the form and texture of the hands and ostrich-feather fan have been rendered.
