Summary[edit]
DescriptionOsteoclasts obtained from monocyte.jpg |
English: The giants of bone tissue: osteoclasts. Osteoclasts are specialized cells of bone tissue, originating from the fusion of multiple monocytes. The following image was captured using the optical microscope at 40x magnification. Osteoclasts were generated by treating peripheral blood monocytes with RANK-L proteins and MCSF, in Petri dishes with conditioned medium, for 21 days. In the boxes above you can observe the "brush border" of the cell, which allows the cell to anchor itself to the substrate, and the nuclei with the nucleoli grouped in the center, resulting from the fusion of the monocytes. In the bottom left box we can observe the formation of a new osteoclast, with the nuclei converging towards the center of the cell. The larger cell has created a channel through which the nuclei of another cell can flow to the center.
