This Diagram Shows the Origins of Behaviour in Primates

Summary[edit]

Description
English: In these species, the part of the cortex that engages in thought (the mind) has evolved to do the bidding of the brain’s executor of emotion, the anterior cingulate gyrus, which continues to be the primary source of motivation. The emergent behaviour is therefore a mix of the instinctive behaviours seen in the lower vertebrates, those additional instinctive behaviours that are exclusively mammalian and those cognitively generated elements of behaviour that reflect the presence of an intelligence. These changes in the neural control systems underlying behaviour are paralleled by changes in the body’s motor systems that reach their zenith in humans and provide for us the fine manipulative abilities necessary to create, in the real world, the objects of our ideations.
