Summary[edit]

Description
English: Opalite from the Tertiary of Nevada, USA.

Opalite is an opal-dominated rock (opal = amorphous hydrous silica = SiO2·nH2O). “Opal” is a mineral/mineraloid name. “Opalite” is a rock name. Opalites form principally by alteration of volcanic rock or alteration of siliceous sinter (a type of hot spring deposit). They are often described as “impure” opal rocks - they lack the famous “fire” & rainbow colors of gem-grade opal. Opalite is fairly hard, has vitreous luster (usually), and breaks with conchoidal fracture, resulting in sharp broken edges.

This opalite sample comes from a Miocene-aged, lacustrine diatomite deposit being mined in northwestern Nevada - the exact geologic context has not been recorded. Diatomite is a biogenic sedimentary rock similar in appearance to chalk - it is whitish, soft, and powdery. Unlike chalk, diatomite is composed of opaline diatom microfossils.

Locality: Colado Mine, northwest of Trinity Peak, Velvet Mining District, Pershing County, northwestern Nevada, USA
