One arrangement for a whipstaff. This shows the helmsman working within a "hutch" from which he would have had a view of the sails and the sky (stars at night) to keep the ship on course.

Description
English: The whipstaff was used to steer ships from the medieval period until the early 18th century, when ships' wheels began to be used. The whipstaff operates on the tiller, which is connected to the rudder head.
