Russell Crater is a favorite target of ours because it has such stunning dune and gully diversity. Over time, we can track changes that occur, both due to the wind and carbon dioxide ice that can carve and alter existing gullies.

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Russell Crater is a favorite target of ours because it has such stunning dune and gully diversity. Over time, we can track changes that occur, both due to the wind and carbon dioxide ice that can carve and alter existing gullies. The dark spots in this cutout are where ice has sublimated from a solid to a gaseous state and exposes the darker subsurface material.

Image cutout is less than 5 km (3 mi) across and the spacecraft altitude was 253 km (157 mi). For full observation details including images with scale bars, visit the source link.
