| Description | The bivouac area of the troop of Sultan's Engineers undergoing the final exercise in Wadi Nakhl, before operations in Dhofar. In view, Ken Orrell and Alec Tomlin. That night, around midnight, in the still air, we heard a small child screaming, again and again. All of us left our tents and stood under the stars listening to the child's pitiful cries. The loud screams emanated from Nakhl and soon faded across the wadi and over the jebel. Our jundis ( soldiers ) explained that a Djinn was taking a child from the village as compensation because the people of Nakhl had failed to complete their side of a bargain which they had made with the Djinn. There was nothing anyone could do! |
