| Description |
Deutsch: Karte mit der generellen Paläogeographie von Mitteleuropa im frühen Oligozän (Rupelium), nach Ziegler (1990).[1] Die Karte zeigt eine Verbindung zwischen „Paläo-Nordsee“ und den südlichen Meeren (Mittelmeer und Paratethys). Eine solche hat aber nur relativ kurzzeitig im mittleren Rupelium bestanden. Zudem erfuhren Oberrheingraben und Mainzer Becken im jüngeren Rupelium eine starke Aussüßung, was bedeutet, dass die Verbindungen zum offenen Meer zu dieser Zeit zumindest abschnittsweise stark verengt gewesen sein müssen. Abkürzungen: M.B. = Mainzer Bucht.
English: Map of Central Europe showing the principal paleogeography for the late Early Oligocene (late Rupelian), after Ziegler (1990).[1] Note that a connection between the Paleo North Sea and the southern seas (Mediterraneran, Paratethys) did not exist throughout the Rupelian but for a relatively short time in the middle Rupelian only. Also, the Upper Rhine Graben (Oberrheingraben) and the Mainz Basin (Mainzer Becken) experienced a strong decrease in salinity in the younger Rupelian, implying that at least parts of the connections to the open sea must have been very narrow at that time. Abbreviations: M.B. = Mainz embayment.
