i88 OLD AND NEW LONDON. (Tyburn. &c., sprung up between i860 and 1870, on the siteof Hopwoods Nursery Grounds and the VictoriaTea Gardens, which we have mentioned above. About the year 1861, we may here remark, anovelty, in the way of street railways, was intro-duced in the Bayswater Road, by Mr. George F.Train, who was at least the pioneer of a usefulinvention. Permission had been given by theCommissioners of Highways for Mr. Train to laydown the rails for his new conveyance, and theevent was inaugurated by a public banquet at St.Jamess Hall. Notwithstanding the coldness withwhich the project was at first received, the planhas since been carried out in various parts ofLondon in the tramways. In the autumn of 1832, when the cholera wasspreading death far and wide throughout the land,Dr. Adam Clarke, the author of a well-knownCommentary on the Bible, here fell a victim tothat fatal malady. He was engaged to preach atBayswater on Sunday, the 26th of August, and onthe Saturday before
