Ashburnham House, in Little Deans Yard, asstated above, was built by Inigo Jones. Its chiefbeauty is a magnificent staircase. In this house wasdeposited the Cottonian Library (now in the BritishMuseum), which had a narrow escape of beingdestroyed by fire here in 1731. One of the mostimportant works in this library was the CustomsBook of the Abbey, written by Abbot Ware in thethirteenth century.
