In this house wasdeposited the Cottonian Library (now in the BritishMuseum), which had a narrow escape of beingdestroyed by fire here in 1731. One of the mostimportant works in this library was the CustomsBook of the Abbey, written by Abbot Ware in thethirteenth century.
