THE FIRST DIVISION PARADING IN WASHINGTON After its return from France. 86 ILLINOIS IN THE WORLD WAR with General Pershing at its head, it marched up Pennsylvania Avenue, inthe city of Washington, to the plaudits of the citys entire population, andpassed in review before Vice-President Marshall, Secretary of War Bakerand General March, chief of staff. Of the 2,000,000 American soldiers who reached France, 1,390,000, ortwo out of three, saw active service at the front. American divisions were inbattle for 200 days, and engaged in thirteen major operations. Twenty-nineof the forty-two American divisions in France were in actual battle. In theSt. Mihiel operations 550,000 Americans were engaged, or five and one-halftimes the number of Union troops in the battle of Gettysburg. The artilleryfired more than a million shells in four hours, the most intense concentrationof artillery fire recorded in history. In the Meuse-Argonne battle, whichlasted for forty-seven days, approximately 1,200,00
