Summary[edit]
DescriptionOld John Tower - 1 - geograph.org.uk - 1472513.jpg |
English: Old John Tower - 1 Old John Tower is a folly. In 1786, to celebrate the coming of age of the 5th Earl of Stamford's son, a huge bonfire was built on the site of a windmill that had stood here. The fire included a pole surrounded by logs and tar barrels. The pole burnt through and toppled, killing Old John the miller. The Earl built this tower in memory of Old John. It is said that the buttress gives the tower the appearance of a beer mug, a humorous reference to the old miller. |
