the assignment of the new lessonclear and definite; to open up the thought in an attractive man-ner; to help the pupils overcome difficulties which they are notlikely to master themselves. At first most new words after theidea has been developed, are diacritically marked by the teacherand pronounced by the pupils; only a few being given to lookup in their dictionaries. As they acquire facility in the use ofthe dictionary, the number of words is increased until by theend of the year only those not found in their dictionaries needthe attention of the teacher. By skillful questions the teacher aims to bring out thethought and feeling in order to obtain good expression. Manyof the stories are dramatized and illustrated. Occasionally theteacher reads a passage or poem in order to suggest higherideals. Choice passages and poems are memorized by thepupils. Special attention is given to the following classics found intheir text-books: The King of the Golden River, Story of the OU Nor. Col. 5
