Description
English: Russian unpaid stampless folded letter Odessa to Bordeaux. '1861 ODESSA VI 16' cancel, manuscript '11' decimes rate, boxed 'AUS RUSSLAND / EIS.POST BUREAU V / 5 7' (T.P.O.) transit, various transits and arrival backstamp Bordeaux.

Details:

  • June 16 (Julian)/June 28 1861 (Gregorian) unpaid letter datelined 16/28 June (Julian/Gregorian) posted at Odessa by André Passachoff. Post office placed script type handstamp 'Porto' (unpaid) and 'ODESSA' postmark.
Dobin: Odessa 57.1.01 type 1.10, 37x29mm. Postmark for foreign mail, used 1857-1866, Rarity 3.[1]
Dobin: Porto 57.1.01 type 1.08. Special postmark for foreign mail, one line italic text in foreign language, used 1844-1863, Rarity 4.[2]
  • July 5 (Gregorian). 'AUS RUSSLAND / EIS.POST BUREAU V / 5 7' boxed 32x14mm marking on Russian mail. Bureau V was the German T.P.O. division centered on Breslau. This marking was used on bagged mail from South Russia which was sorted in transit to Berlin. Used on franco (paid) and porto (unpaid) letters.
Vandervelde: type Ry10a.
  • Twice Prussian accountancy mark 'P.35.'(PRUSSIA), used on Prussian transit mail from Poland and Russia, with destination France. By treaty of 1858-07-01 between Prussia and France the usage of accountancy markings was agreed. This marking originates from the first account period which was from July 1, 1858 to December 31, 1861. Article allowing Prussia 77.5 centimes per 15 grams of mail. Single rate was 11 decimes (1.1 francs) due. France paid for Prussian transit.
  • July 7. 'PRUSSE VALENCIENNES 7 JUIL. 61' French entry mark, mail from Prussia (Prusse) entering France at the border town of Valenciennes. The small 3's show this mark was struck at Paris. Rate was assessed at 11 decimes, and manuscript '11' applied.
