Notes | In the autumn of 719 or 721,[1] a large flock of pied wagtails perched at the Linde Hall in the palatial complex of the Tang dynasty. Emperor Xuanzong (Minghuang) and the official Wei Guangcheng perceived the pied wagtails as being close to each other, likening them to brothers who demonstrated fraternal affection, due their characteristic calling and wagging of tail. Emperor Xuanzong commissioned Wei Guangcheng to compose a record of this occurrence and he personally wrote Wei's composition onto this handscroll. The work is the only known surviving example of the emperor's calligraphy. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
