Potato-tops must have possessed singular virtue, forthere was no want of spirit when the test came ^ OnMaumee. Thepeople living in this tract were therefore between twofires, some preferring to be governed by the laws ofthe territory, and the others giving their allegiance toOhio. The respective governors were the principalsin the quarrel, and showed a strong disposition tofight, while the chief executive at Washington, beingunable to interfere, was obliged to assume the role ofa spectator, advising, however, that the interestedparties defer action until the convening of Con-gress.
