Syracuse was reached atfour o^clock in the afternoon, and theremainder of the day was spent in walksand drives through the city which I hadvisited several limes in former years, and of wliose his-tory I had a fair knowledge. Long before the white mancame, a band of Iroquois had built their wigwams in thelow basin,almostentirely surrounded by hills, that lies tothe south of Lake Onondaga, and from here followed*he ()ursuits of war and peace. We first hear of tiiisIndian village in 1653 through the Jesuit missionary.Father Le Moyne, who had come to establish goodfeeling between the Iroquois and other Indian tribes;and we see strange evidences of a counteracting in-fluence made probably by his own countrymen inthe discovery of European weapons and ammunition,that were distributed among the red men about thesame time. Over its dreary waste the cry ofthe w^Id eat, the warning of the rattlesnake and thehooting of the owl lent their sounds to the weird chorusof Nature, and it was here that the wily Indian came toseek his game. It was through Father IjQ Moyne,too, that we hear of the great Salt Springs, which hevisited at the southern end of the lake in companywith some Huron and Onondaga chiefs. The Indians,unable to comprehend the strange effect of salt andclear water bubbling from the same fountain, had asuperstition that the springs were possessed by an e\nlspirit and were afraid to drink from them ; but whenthe white man began to share their old haunts, we hearof the bewitched water being fearlessly used, and theevil spirit converted into a propitious one.
