The settlement consisted of theFort and an old adobe house, called the hospital. Agarden of eight or ten acres, filled with vegetables andtropical fruits, surrounded the Fort, cattle covered theplains and boats were tied to the wharves. Sutters confirmed grant contained eleven leagues. The Fort, so called, was a parallelogram. Its wallswere of adobe, its dimensions five hundred by onehundred and fifty feet. It had loop-holes, bastions atthe angles, and twelve cannon. Inside of the walls were granaries, warehouses, store-houses, shops, and in the centre of it all the house ofthe commander, the potentate, Sutter. His house wasrough, Bare rafters and unpanelled walls. Many ofthe rooms were roughly furnished, crude benches anddeal tables. Fine China bowls did duty for both cupsand plates, and silver S;)oons were the only luxurywhich marked the service of the meals.

The Fort was a business centre. In it was located ablacksmith, a carpenter, and a general variety andliquor store. Prices were booming. Four dollarswere charged for shoeing a horse. Wlieat sold forone dollar per bushel, peas for a dollar and a halfper bushel. A sort of gravel road led to the spot, over whichhorses galloped, and heavy wagons rolled. Sutter owned twelve thousand cattle, two thousandhorses and mules, from one thousand to fifteen hun-dred sheep, and two thousand hogs.
