| Description |
English: Somehow I learned about a pair of towns that had my name, except for an umlaut. They were 22 km (14 miles) north of Frankfurt, and I drove to see them.
This is the sign at the entrance to Ober-Wöllstadt, the smaller of the two towns. The scene is on Bundesstrasse 3, the main road which goes from Frankfurt, goes through Nieder-Wöllstadt, then through Ober-Wöllstadt, and on to Friedberg and Giessen. As I remember, the center of Ober-Wöllstadt smelled like a barnyard in 1960. The building behind the sign made or sold apple wine. The two towns, Ober- and Nieder-Wöllstadt, were consolidated in 1972 (?) with the name of Wöllstadt. |
