c TO £ u TOCO z SULTANATES OF BANGASSU AND RAFAI 213 the village of the chief Sandu, who is an uncle of Het-man. This elderly gentleman remembered the daysof fighting and slave-hunting; he was conversantwith all the ancient customs of the people, and didnot disavow them like his up-to-date nephew. Het-man valued his uncles advice, and handed over tohim any unruly subjects for judgment, which wasadministered in the old-fashioned way behind theshelter of his zariba. This was extremely convenientfor the progressive sultan, for he need not know whatwent on in Sandus village, or at any rate he declinedto know. Near Kumbu the river is not navigable on accountof impassable rapids, so we marched along the bankof the Mbomu as far as Bagesse, and there resumedour boats. The rain poured down daily in torrents, causing the river to rise steadily, and it was not easyto find suitable landing places. My hunting expeditions were not very successful:I came across very few antelopes, hardly any monkeys
