a été construite par les Américains en 1887 dans les ateliers Rhode Island Locojnotive Works.Puis sont venues les locomotives électriouos de Siemens,Ileilmann, etc. Enfin, les ingénieurs Marcel Deprez,Maurice Leblanc et dautres ont entrepris, en vue duMétropolitain do Paris, la construction dune locomotive àlaquelle lénergie motrice est transmise dune usine cen-trale au moyen dun troisième rail conducteur. — Locomotives sans foyer. Ces machines sont une inven-tion américaine, due au docteur Lamm, et perfectionnéepar L. Francq. La chaudière est remplacée par un réser-voir cylindrique on tôle dacier, entouré dune couche dematières non conductrices de la chaleur pour qu il nopuisse se refroidir trop vite. Au départ, on rempht ceréservoir aux trois quarts doau surchauffée, ot cest cetteeau qui fournit la vapeur nécessaire à la mise en mouve-ment des différentes pièces du mécanisme moteur.
