itherto concealed it, intolight, and tumbles with a copious cataract onthe summit of a ridge of lower hills, about threemiles from the city. The water comes downpure, limpid, and cold, over a ledge of graniterock, in a broad sheet, into a natural reservoir;and, from hence, in the year 1719, it was led byan aqueduct, constructed by Albuquerque, thecaptain-general of the province, along the ridge,to the convent of Santa Theresa. Nothing canbe conceived more picturesque and beautiful,than the road formed to conduct this water. Itis a green level avenue of considerable breadth,winding its way through primeval woods overthe before inaccessible ridges, on the summitlevel of these romantic hills, forming in differentplaces artificial terraces and platforms; whencethe traveller looks down from his airy height,on each side of him, on some of the mostlovely views in nature.
