brown eyes are full of spirit. She wears a gownof blue chiffon cut low in the front, and in the centre of hercorsage is a single pink rose. A row of pearls is round her neck,and large earrings are in her ears. Her dark brown hair ismassed high above her forehead, and descends behind to thenape of the neck. She holds a small black spaniel in her arms. Height, 30 inches; width, 25 inches.Purchased of Messrs. Sulley & Co., London. No. 112WILLIAM DOBSON 1610—1646EARL OF PEMBROKE The head and shoulders of a nobleman of the time of CharlesI. His doublet, which is of yellow satin, is fastened in frontby a single jewel, and has the sleeves slashed, showing a finelinen shirt beneath. A broad collar with a lace border falls overthe shoulders, and draped over his left arm is a dark-coloredcloak, on which is emblazoned the star of the Order of the Gar-ter. He wears a mustache and small pointed beard, and his fairhair falls unhindered upon his shoulders. Height, 30 inches; width, 24 inches.

Beyond these the sceneextends over a sunny meadow to a mass of fine trees whichgradually disappear in the haze of distance. Her costume is of the timeof Louis XV; her dress of light blue silk is elaborately em-broidered with roses, the sleeves being finished off with deeplace flounces, while a knot of pink ribbon is worn at eitherelbow and in the centre of her corsage.
