| Description |
English: Not Quite "The Green Grassy Slopes of the Boyne" This is the industrialised Boyne at Drogheda and is a few miles east of "the green grassy slopes of the Boyne,where the Orangemen with William did join, and fought for our glorious deliv'rance".. at the Battle of the Boyne of 1690. The Battle of the Boyne was also where the Royal Welch Fusiliers first saw action. It was one six foot regiments of the line to participate in the battle.
Drogheda has its own bloody history - the mainly Protestant population of the town and its garrison were put to the sword by Oliver Cromwell in 1649. http://www.libraryireland.com/HistoryIreland/Massacre-Drogheda.php |
