  • Subjects (LCSH): Denny Regrade (Seattle, Wash.)

Despite the title given by the University of Washington Libraries, the regrade shown had nothing to do with the Denny Regrade, which was at least six blocks away. Nearly all of Downtown Seattle's streets were significantly regraded at one time or another. Also, despite what they say, that is certainly Seattle First Presbyterian Church, built 1894 at left at the northwest corner of 4th & Spring (compare File:The Lincoln Hotel, northwest corner of Madison St and 4th Ave, Seattle (CURTIS 209).jpeg, where the church can be seen at right). By the time of this photo, it would already have been superseded by their 1907 church, but was apparently still standing.

Given that angle there is no way the remaining building in the middle is at Fifth & Spring, nor does it appear to be a church. It is presumably a building called "The Wood," which stood at the northeast corner of Fourth and Spring. See 1905 Baist map of Seattle, Plate 3 and (for context, since the plates divide at Fourth Avenue) Plate 2).
