Summary[edit]
DescriptionNo. 6 Convent Place and The Convent.jpg |
English: View of Convent Place, Gibraltar depicting the Government offices at No. 6 in the foreground and The Convent (the Governor's residence) in the background. Side entrance to No.6 Convent Place, Gibraltar - headquarters of HM Government for Gibraltar. Between 1925 and 1982 the building served as a school run by the Loreto nuns and formerly above the door on the cornice was inscribed "Loreto Convent". The plaque records that “This building was used by the Board of Sanitary Commissioners and their successors, the City Council from 1870 to 1924. Between 1925 and 1982 it was used as a school by the Loreto Nuns who won the love and esteem of the people of Gibraltar”. The plaque was the brain-child of Ms Susan Seruya, an ex-pupil.
Gibraltar Chronicle, 15th December 2020, article by Richard Garcia, The legacy of the Loreto nuns [1]
Text from gibraltar-intro.blogspot.com: When the girls moved out of Convent Place and into their new school on Queensway, the old Convent Place building was refurbished for use as Government Offices including the Office of the Chief Minister. There is a plaque on the wall by the main entrance commemorating its use by the Loreto nuns and their schools between 1925 and 1982. It reads: This building was used by the Board of Sanitary Commissioners and their successors, the City Council from 1870 to 1924. Between 1925 and 1982 it was used as a school by the Loreto Nuns who won the love and esteem of the people of Gibraltar
