Mario Rutelli, nonno del futuro sindaco di Roma, preparò e fuse i quattro colossali gruppi bronzei ognuno sdraiato su un animale acquatico che simboleggia l'acqua nelle sue diverse forme. Compiuta agli inizi del 1901, la fontana rimaneva però ancora «inspiegabilmente» nascosta entro il recinto ligneo innalzato per la esecuzione dei lavori. Forse la vecchia Roma papalina mal sopportava che di fronte alla basilica di S. Maria degli Angeli, che si vede sullo sfondo, fossero mostrate queste femminili, procaci bellezze. Avevano fatto da modelle le ragazze di Anticoli Corrado, paesino vicino a Roma, famoso per l'avvenenza delle sue donne. La sera del 10 febbraio 1901 una piccola folla si avvicinò al cantiere e in breve tempo la recinzione venne abbattuta. Così le Naiadi apparvero in tutto lo splendore. Nei giorni successivi, tra i visitatori illustri si registrò anche la regina Margherita: l'eco delle polemiche aveva suscitato la sua curiosità. Giunta in carrozza ordinò al cocchiere di fare il giro della fontana ben tre volte e ripartì mostrando un vivo compiacimento. Oggi, in questi tempi bui, si è lasciato che le incrostazioni parzialmente ricoprissero le grazie delle fanciulle; quasi un ripristinato "velo del pudore". |
