Summary[edit]
DescriptionNikon D7000, Fuji X-T1 (15406700506).jpg |
Impressed by Fujifilm's X100 and X-E1, I held off getting an X-T1 as long as I could, but finally succumbed. Initial impressions are very favourable and the (electronic) viewfinder is as good as they say. The D7000 is literally a homebody - I have taken it out only a couple of times in nearly two years. I love what it does and how it does it, but the bulk and weight are just too much for me; I have struggled to get images free of camera shake, even at reasonable shutter speeds, because of this. The X-T1 and two lenses (the 35/1.4 pictured and the large 23/1.4) were quite comfortable to lug round for a few hours. Unsurprising, as the equivalent Nikon set-up (as shown here) is almost 400g heavier. What have I "lost" in adopting the X-T1 as a DSLR replacement? An optical viewfinder, yes, but in its place a less obtrusive focal plane shutter without mirror-slap. I do miss the option to raise the camera to the eye to assess a shot whether it's turned on or not. But I'll take individual dials to control shutter speed, aperture and ISO instead. It still irks me slightly that the aperture ring on the Fuji lenses is so easily knocked: all too easy to go from Auto to f/16 while stowing or retrieving the camera. At least if the dial had gone the other way, with the other settings on automatic the camera would typically choose a usable shutter speed and ISO rating... |
