| Description |
English: Newton Street/Macklin Street, Holborn The building on the corner of Macklin Street and Newton Street is Wimbledon House, its architecture in contrast to the modern office blocks further along Newton Street. Macklin Street, now an unremarkable back street connecting Holborn and Covent Garden, once known as Lewknors Lane and later Charles Street, was notorious in the 18th and 19th centuries for its houses of ill-repute. It was renamed Macklin Street in 1878, after an 18th century Shakesperian actor, and became gentrified. |
