Summary[edit]
DescriptionNewton Churchyard Cross, Porthcawl - geograph.org.uk - 4976329.jpg |
English: Newton Churchyard Cross, Porthcawl
Located in the churchyard on the south side of the Grade I listed Parish Church of St John the Baptist. The CADW Listed Buildings Database records that this a restored medieval preaching cross. The four-step square plan base, 3.3 metres across, and the weathered socket stone are original features. The shaft, topped by a crucifixion, replaced a stump in about 1890. Churchyard crosses were the focus for funerary ritual and gave a platform for itinerant preachers. The Cross was Grade II listed in 1951. |
