Summary[edit]

Description

"News of the World", by Erik Pevernagie (100 x 100 cm) Oil on canvas} .xx

In the modern media landscape, soft news is not captivating, but hard news, breaking news, is. It does not only want to be in the news—it wants to be the news. It does not mean being a vehicle to supply the news but becoming integral to the news narrative itself while craving news with a shock value and essentially scoops.

The mass media want their audience to be excited: not by soft news, but by hard news, by breaking news.

The modern media wants to be an antidote to the usual “No news is good news“ and is not interested in quasi-news, newsworthiness, or interestingness.

The dead tree media sometimes arouses major troubles by making illegal incursions into privacy. Facts accuracy and double-checking are very often put on a side track. Conscientious journalists learn from their mistakes or the blunders of colleagues and do double-double or triple-checking.

To break the news, attract a larger audience, or sell more copies, crime, vice, gossip, tittle-tattle, rumors, and scandal must be used to still the unbridled lust for sensation.

Sexual misconduct, drug use, or criminal acts of national or local celebrities were favorite occasions for “News of the World” to send insiders and undercover freelancers on the buzz path. By using illegal photographic substantiation and phone hacking in police investigations, they transgress the deontological rules.

If they uphold their journalistic integrity, the media can navigate the challenging balance between being trusted informants and influencers. This is crucial to avoid eroding public trust and violating ethical standards.
