More could be done, of course, as always, if more money were avail-able to hire more staff, to buy more books, to increase service. But theimportant thing to the Kern County Library System is that SOME-THING CAN BE DONE, and done adequately, to provide service tothese institutions through the careful use of a librarys current re-sources. I was about to see my first branchlibrary and meet its librarian. The welcome was a warm one, as was theday. We were chatting about the aims of the consultant position tospeakers of Spanish, when all of a sudden, the small library which I mustsay consists of a small room adjoining the local fire truck station, becameengulfed with about 50 young people. We had company from the near-by schools fourth and fifth grades. They all wanted books and morebooks and so they met head-on with four librarians. I was spotted almostimmediately and put to work.
