for our Navy. Surely, therefore, it is important that nothingshould be done to discourage the growth of this newly-formedNaval Reserve in Newfoundland. I know not whose is thefault, but this is what has occurred this year. NEWFOUNDLAND. 30 complexions of our own West Country men and the hardy lookof our deep-sea fishermen. In the streets of St. Johns I heardthe familiar accents of our West Country, of Scotland, andstill more frequently of Ireland, but nowhere could I detectthe American accent, which is so pronounced in some parts ofCanada, where the people, though true British at heart, areoften decidedly Yankee in their speech. It is an island in which theEnglishman soon finds himself at home, and he cannot fail tolove these people, among whose leading characteristics are anunaffected heartiness, kindliness and hospitality.
