Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Built in 1882, this Italianate and Gothic Revival-style building was designed by Gottfried L. Normann to serve as a public opera house and city hall for the town of Newberry, South Carolina. The building features a buff brick exterior, decorative brick trim surrounds at the window bays, a hipped roof with side gables, a corbeled brick cornice, a tower with a pyramidal hipped roof, gables with clock faces, arched windows below the clock faces, a cupola, and a weathervane, four-over-four and six-over-four double-hung windows, stone trim, a vaulted metal canopy at the side entrance, a front entrance within a decorative arched portal, a two-story gabled rear ell, and a three-story side ell with a low-slope roof enclosed by a parapet. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969, and is a contributing structure in the Newberry Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, and increased to its present size in 2004. The building served as Newberry City Hall until 1993, when the city government moved to a former bank building on College Street, and the building was subsequently restored, today operating as a performing arts center and events venue.
