Summary[edit]

Description

On 24 March 1990, the first New Zealand International Carillon Festival (and the first in the Southern Hemisphere) began in Wellington. It ran for a month and showcased the carillon’s continuing contributions to the local soundscape.

Depicted in this striking poster for the festival is the centrepiece of the National War Memorial, the 51-metre-high carillon tower, which soars above Pukeahu (Mount Cook). Inside is the carillon itself, one of the largest musical instruments in the world. It is played using a clavier (keyboard) consisting of rows of wooden keys which the carillonist plays with their hands and feet.

First built in 1932, the carillon tower has recently been earthquake strengthened as part of the National War Memorial upgrade. More information on the history of the tower, and the carillon instrument can be found at www.mch.govt.nz/pukeahu/park/national-war-memorial/carillon

The poster itself comes from a series of 1990 Commission posters, but Archives New Zealand hold many records about the carillon itself: from maps and plans to photographs and war art.
