In the intervals of attendingschool he worked on his fathers farm, and after finishing his ownschooling he continued for some years to work on the farm msummer while teaching school in winter. Thus he was engageduntil 1844, when he went to Ontario, La Orange County, Indianaand began the study of law. He was admitted to the bar at FortWayne, Indiana, in August, 1845, and at once began the practiceof the profession. In 1847 he was elected Prosecuting Attorneyfor La Orange County for three years. Impaired health, howeverled him to leave Indiana in 1851, and to make his home atTrenton, New Jersey, where he remained until 1868, when he re-moved to Elizabeth, New Jersey, and finally, m 1876, he settledin New York, in which city he has practised law since> 1868 While in Trenton, Mr. Dutcher was a member of the SchoolBoard, and of the City Council, City Attorney, and captain of amilitary company. ANDBEW DUTCHEE 119 1856-57, and in the latter year Speaker of the House. From 1856to his resignation in 1865 he was reporter for the Supreme Courtof New Jersey, and published five volumes of reports. From1862 to 1869 he was clerk of the United States Circuit Court ofNew Jersey. In Elizabeth he was City Attorney, and held othermunicipal offices, and in 1872 was a member of the Legislaturefrom Union County. Mr. Dutcher was a practitioner in all the courts of New Jer-sey, in both civil and criminal cases. In 1861 he was associatedwith the United States District Attorney for that State in a trialfor murder committed on Long Island Sound, the chief issuebeing whether the federal government, or the governments ofNew York and Connecticut, had jurisdiction over those waters.The court held in favor of the former, and the prisoner wasconvicted.
