A younger mem-ber of the family was Nathan Burnham, who was born atShaftsbury, and who married Rebecca Noble of Tinmouth, amember of another eminent patriot family. They removed toNew York State in 1812, and lived on a fine farm at Woodville,in Jefferson County. Their son, the subject of this sketch, was born in 1816. Hewas educated at the Belleville Academy, and then went West, toDetroit, Michigan, and became a clerk in a dry-goods store. Af-terward he filled a similar place at Utica, New York. Finallyhe went to Brooklyn, New York, and there formed a partnershipwith H. P. Journeay, and established what soon came to be oneof the foremost dry-goods stores not only in that city, but in thewhole United States. Later Hugh Boyd was added to the firm.It was Mr. Burnhams theory that a good clerk must be made bylong training and education in correct business methods. Hetherefore selected with care the young men who gave the mostpromise of such development, and had them carefully trained in 42

LYMAN SATTERLEE BURNHAM 43 the ways of the firm. There are to-day in that store men whowere personally engaged by him in its early years and who havegrown old in its service. In such ways, and through the con-stant practice of the most honorable methods, the unsurpassedpatronage of the great establishment was secured. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Mr. Burnham became aleader in many movements to sustain the government and to aidin preserving the Union and to care for the soldiers and theirfamilies. He was conspicuous in organizing and managing thegreat Brooklyn Sanitaiy Fair, in aid of the United States Sani-tary Commission, and suggested the establishment of the medalof honor for bravery in the field given by the Kings CountyWar Fund Committee. In other public works he was equally active. He participatedwith Henry Ward Beecher in the early closing movement. Hewas a sincere lover of good music, and was one of the foremostmembers and for many years an officer of the Philharmonic Soc
