New York Law Booms Nudism In New Jersey. Rev. Boone Reveals 8 Camps Here Belong To World Conference. Silent On Sites. (Editor;s note: This is first of a series of stories on nudist camps in New Jersey) By Associated Press Netcong, New Jersey; August 28, 1935. There are no guideposts to show you the way, but if you're really of a turn to play volley ball, checkers or tag in the altogether It's comparatively stmpis to find a nudist camp in North Jersey. And you can do It without following the trail of Will Searles' skittish mules up on Schooley's Mountain. This has been a top summer for nudist activities in the Garden State, and many an honest heart beating under prosaic serge, tweed or wool and taffeta within the urban limits this winter beat this summer under nothing but a bronzed akin. The New York State law against nudism, passed last. April, Increased the numbers of the sunshine and health cults In Morris, Sussex and Passaic Counties. Dr. Haley Boone, one of the American pioneers of the movement and executive secretary of the International Nudist Conference, says there are eight member camps of the conference m this State with a total membership of 1,200. He does not disclose their whereabouts, however. Many Private Camps. Besides these. Dr. Boone says, there) are at least thirty private camps of 10 or 12 members each in different parts of the rugged Jersey hills. Most of the ramps are operated in the same fashion. No alcoholic beverages are allowed on the premises and men and women are housed in separate quarters. Guests are permitted to visit the camp only once, lights: must be out at midnight, and adequate clothing must be worn at meals. Probably the most elaborate and tha ma-it Isolated of the camps is that of the American Gymnosophical Association at Rock Lodge, near Stock holm. You awing off Route 25 at the out skirts of Stockholm and ride along a narrow winding dirt road. Five mllJ on around a corner is a stone house as big as a Loire Chateau. Play Volley Ball. Dr. Herman Soshinski, director of the camp, organized the association in 1930. On an average weekday there, yon will find a couple of dozen men and women, strolling around the grounds as bare as the naked women who scared Will Searles when he saw her up a tree near his Long Valley farm. There Is a lovely lake at Rock Lodge, and on the banks of the lake at least a score of tent are usea oy nuaisis families. The head of the family may spend his working days in the city, perhaps even as a clothing salesman, but on week-ends he comes to camp, rids himself of his clothing and goes In for swimming, volley ball (for soma reason nudists like to play volley ball), tennis, wood chopping and walks. There are 220 acres of private property. There are no mosquitoes, and, there are running hot and cold water, an Ice plant, reading rooms and dining rooms. Dafices and bridge parties are held. At Dr. Soshlnskl's camp the background of the applicant for membership In the association is carefully searched. His education and motive for Joining are studied. The members must follow the rules strictly.
Nudist Squabble. Long Valley Farmer May Get Work Done When Charge Is Settled. Associated Press Long Valley, New Jersey; August 28, 1935. Maybe after tomorrow Will Searles can get back to his farming and the nudists next door can romp on Schooley's Mountain without fear of further altercations. Will says he's gotten way behind in his work since the fuss began last week. What with people coming to the house all the time to a:;k him what he saw and what he thought about it, he isn't getting the cows milked until after 9 o'clock and what's worse he hasn't begun to get the hay In. The nudists accuse Will of pefklnf, at them but Will says they trespassed on his property and he Just happened to see them. There was one woman who weighed about 300 pounds too. Will says, and she certainly looked s sight. Will was charged with disorderly conduct but the charge was dropped yesterday and another charge made. The nudists now want him to sign a bond to keep the peace and Will is to appear before Magistrate Louis Hyler in Netcong tomorrow.
